# Overview

> Tako is a search engine for visualizing and sharing the world's knowledge.

## Why Tako?

Traditional search APIs return a ranked list of links. But here's where it breaks for agents: a search result is just a link. The agent still has to crawl it, parse it, pray the number is current, and hope it didn't hallucinate the rest.

We don't think the future of development is agents reading webpages faster. It's agents getting structured, real-time data pulled directly from the source.

<Tip>
  **Structured data** has a defined shape — typed fields, values, and units (think rows and columns, or JSON), each with named sources attached, so your model can read it directly. *Unstructured* data is the opposite: raw web pages and text your model has to crawl, parse, and interpret before it can trust a single number.
</Tip>

That's Tako: a real-time knowledge API. Ask a question and get a synthesized, source-attributed answer — or dispatch a deep-research agent — all grounded in structured [knowledge cards](/documentation/getting-started/what-is-tako/knowledge-cards): typed data, named sources, and methodology, pulled straight from trusted providers across finance, macroeconomics, geopolitics, sports, and weather. Your model gets the data directly — far more compact than crawling pages. And where structured data isn't the right fit, Tako covers the live web for you too, made agent-ready: web search results in [Search](/documentation/integrating-tako/search/overview), blended into the synthesized [Answer](/documentation/integrating-tako/answer/overview), and full extracted page contents through [Contents](/documentation/integrating-tako/contents/overview) — so you get broad, accurate coverage without ever crawling a page yourself.

### Tako vs. traditional search APIs

|                        | Tako                                                    | Traditional search & LLM-search APIs              |
| ---------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------- |
| **What comes back** | Typed, structured data — values, units, and time series | Cleaned web text: links, snippets, or page chunks |
| **Source attribution** | A named data provider and methodology, per value | A URL the text was scraped from |
| **Coverage** | Curated data providers *plus* the live web | Ranked open web only |
| **Output** | An interactive knowledge card, ready to render | Raw text your model still has to parse |
| **Post-processing** | None — data arrives typed and structured | Crawl, parse, dedupe, and reconcile it yourself |
| **Correctness** | Authoritative by named source | Ranked by relevance — you verify it |
